Workshop Facilitator - Tim Thompson

9/24/2014

"The only form of knowledge is experience" - Albert Einstein

This is why CanGEA has worked so hard to bring a workshop facilitator with a wealth of experience in both international technology transfer AND geothermal project development to this gathering.

Strategy Consultant, Tim Thompson, has worked in Canada, the United States, Europe, South America, and the Middle East. His recent projects include:
  • Developing a technology strategy for the largest Canadian unconventional energy operator
  • Managing and delivering an assessment of global energy super-major's unconventional technology strategy, and putting in place plans to achieve Tier 1 performance
  • Developing and leading a market entry strategy for a Fortune 50 corporation in the refining space

Mr. Thompson is the author of CanGEA's Geothermal Technology Roadmap: Global Best Practices Summary - Exploration through Generation.

Further, Tim is the CEO of Borealis Geopower, a start-up geothermal developer with assets in British Columbia.

Tim brings a perspective of the local challenges and opportunities for geothermal energy development all around the world.

Are you curious about geothermal energy development in Canada? Or why Canada is the only major country on the Pacific Ring of Fire not taking advantage of Earth's heat? Come to CanGEA's presentation during the GRC's Business Development session. The presentation is titled  A Qualitative Assessment of Major Barriers Facing the Geothermal Industry in Canada, and will focus on the policy and technological challenges faced by geothermal developers. CanGEA's chair and managing director, Alison Thompson, is delivering the presentation. Alison prepared the presentation with Grant Van Hal and Faisal Bakhteyar.

University of Victoria's Centre for Aerospace Research

9/12/2014

There will be a guest speaker from the University of Victoria's Centre for Aerospace Research (CfAR), which specializes in the development of Unmanned Air Vehicles (UAV). The CfAR Director, Afzal Suleman, was recently named a tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computational and Experimental Mechanics. Tier 1 researchers are world leaders in their fields. Dr. Suleman will be sending a representative to speak about the potential for technology transfer on his behalf. The Centre for Aerospace Research works closely with both industry and academic partners; they undertake cutting edge research in this field.

Geothermal on the Upswing

9/5/2014

As the Geothermal Energy Association Reported in 2013,

“The global geothermal market is on the upswing in 2013, and recent reports show an estimated 18.6 GW of geothermal power currently in development across 70 countries, accounting for $100 billion in investment.”

By all indications this trend is set to continue in 2015.

Issues Faced by Women in the Geothermal Industry

9/5/2014

WING's polls surfaced other issues faced by women in geothermal, they include:
  • Assertive women being perceived as aggressive
  • Too few women in technical fields due to lack of encouragement
  • Male dominance in the field leads to fewer women being promoted
  • Harder to obtain respect from peers, compared to men
  • Lack of accountability to ensure that women are treated equally
  • More women in science and engineering
  • Too few women in upper management, negotiations, and as leads in general

Men also encouraged to attend. Advance tickets are necessary for us to order catering.

The mission of WING is "to promote the education, professional development, and advancement of women in the geothermal community."

This event will be hosted by WING. The purpose is to network, discuss industry issues, and discuss issues faced specifically by women in the industry. The two major challenges faced by women in the industry are unequal pay, and a lack of female leadership roles and mentors. As a part of their mission WING hosts networking events, awards ceremonies, and organizes mentoring programs to develop a stronger female presence in the geothermal industry. Click here for a list of some  other issues faced by women in the geothermal industry, as reported by WING's polls.

As well come and meet companies in the Canadian geothermal industry and hear about the projects they are working on.  Many of the companies have taken on undergraduate and graduate students for co-op and summer work terms in the past and are already planning for next year. Companies have also sponsored postgraduate work and are looking for additional research projects to be undertaken.

Funding through various government programs (NRCan, Eco Canada, NSERC, etc.), that will assist companies to work with students, will be highlighted.

This is an amazing opportunity to share your own experiences and ask questions of industry professionals. We encourage you to come share your experiences and learn from others.

While this event is centred around female involvement in the geothermal community, we welcome any males wishing to attend, especially those offering to be mentors. Please come and bring a friend!

The cost for regular event registration is $25, and $15 plus GST (5%) for student registration. Click here to register. If you have any further questions, contact CanGEA at info@cangea.ca or a.blair@gns.cri.nz.
