CanGEA Presents to the Standing Committee on Finance in The House of Commons

10/19/2016

CanGEA’s Chair, Alison Thompson, will deliver a speech to the standing committee highlighting what federal actions and measures would assist the development of the geothermal industry in Canada. The Standing Committee have asked three questions (below) and we believe geothermal energy is one of Canada’s best solutions to these challenges and our Chair will be passionately representing our industry on October 21st.

Standing Committee Questions:
1. What federal measures would help Canadians generally – and such specific groups as the unemployed, Indigenous peoples, those with a disability and seniors – maximize, in the manner of their choosing, their contributions to the country’s economic growth?

2. What federal actions would assist Canada’s businesses – in all regions and sectors – meet their expansion, innovation and prosperity goals, and thereby contribute to economic growth in the country?

3. What federal measures would ensure that urban, rural and remote communities throughout Canada enable residents to make their desired contribution to the country’s economic growth and businesses to expand, prosper and serve domestic and international customers in order to contribute to growth?

CanGEA Answers that our Chair will present to the Standing Committee:
1. The Canadian federal government needs to recognize the value of renewable heat, and allow geothermal facilities to be classified as heat and/or power.

2. By allowing geothermal heat economic diversification will occur in communities throughout Canada, especially remote ones.

3. Geothermal, once established domestically, will be a major export industry. Also the ability to economically grow fruits and vegetables will reduce imports without affecting quality of life.
