"Geothermal is the only true baseload renewable energy so a country not capitalising on it would be mad." - The New Zealand Herald
While Canada is one of the 82 countries worldwide using geothermal heat for spas and fish hatcheries, it can be doing so much more. Geothermal energy is used around the world to produce jobs and economic prosperity in regions with geothermal resources. To name a few examples, these videos show geothermal heat being used for greenhouses, fish farms, tree nurseries, and even breweries!

Geothermal energy is also delivering clean, low-cost, baseload electricity in 24 countries, however, not 1 MW of geothermal power is being produced in Canada.

Have you ever wondered why?

We will answer this question and more during a policy session with our chair and policy director. This will be presented in two parts:
  1. CanGEA's chair, Alison Thompson, who also sits on the International Geothermal Association's board, will present Federal and Provincial Tax Enablers available to other industries, such as oil & gas and other renewables, that improve geothermal energy economics. The information is derived from a horizontal tax scan prepared for CanGEA by our member company DLA Piper.
  2. This will be followed by a presentation on Geothermal Policy Mechanisms by our policy director, Justin Crewson. This talk will be based on our recently released report, International Geothermal Policy Mechanisms Best Practices: Identifying the Canadian Gap, which is included in registration.
  3. There will be time allotted for networking with guest speakers, developers, CanGEA members and staff.

Registration to this event includes a digital copy of our reports International Geothermal Policy Mechanisms Best Practices: Identifying the Canadian Gap and Un-Natural Gas: Alberta's Dirty Substitute to Geothermal Energy.
These reports make an excellent pre-read to the event. Can't attend the event, but would like to read the report? Get it here.
