Thompson discusses the advantages of geothermal direct heating and geothermal projects currently being developed in British Columbia. Marla Orenstein, from the Canada West Foundation and Juli Rohl, from the Energy Futures Lab, published a report that sets out recommendations for the Government of Alberta that came out of the LEAD (Leveraging our Energy Assets for Diversification) project. CanGEA Chair, Alison Thompson is a Fellow of the Energy Futures Lab.
The report discusses the different avenues available to Alberta to diversify its economy and energy sector. The report looks at geothermal energy as a potential among other sources as well. Researchers of the Clean Energy Research Group (CERG) from Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, British Columbia, explain how Canada and the Province of B.C. can do more for the development of geothermal resources.
Andy Hira and Nastaran Arianpoo the authors of the working paper say there is a lack of regulatory frameworks for geothermal energy development in several provincial and territorial jurisdictions. This creates an uncertain environment for investors and developers to advance projects beyond the exploration phase. Click here to view the working paper. On February 25, 2021, the Government of Alberta released its 2021-24 Fiscal Plan (Alberta Budget 2021). The Provincial Government announced $28 million will be allocated for Geothermal Resource Development and the Mineral Strategy.

Turboden will supply a new class binary power generation system to recover heat from a brine flow downstream of an existing flash plant. Click here to read more. The City of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan is exploring how geothermal resources in the area can bring economic benefits to the community.
