This 44-page report identifies the strategic opportunity presented to Alberta by its considerable geothermal resources, which have been confirmed by CanGEA’s geothermal favourability maps and resource estimates. Alberta can aggressively phase out its dependence upon coal for base load electricity generation. Reliance upon coal for power is a cause of significant damage to public health. This dependence also results in very large amounts of GHG emissions that have contributed to Canada’s current trajectory to fall far short of its international GHG reductions commitments.

The positive economic effects of geothermal energy in comparison to natural gas are also highlighted. Geothermal energy is not only price competitive with natural gas, but it also produces more jobs, including substantial entrepreneurial opportunities from using geothermal heat.

The purchase of this report includes a summary backgrounder.
