Job Title: Geothermal Policy Manager Intern
Employer: Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA)
Employment Period: 12 Months
Regular Hours: 37.5 hours/week
Start Date: May 1, 2020

Company Details:
The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) is the collective voice of Canada’s geothermal energy industry with a focus on the power generation from geothermal energy resources and industry-scale direct use. As a non-profit industry association, we represent the interests of our member companies with the primary goal of unlocking the country’s tremendous geothermal energy potential.

CanGEA promotes the industry and the potential of geothermal energy in Canada through outreach events, research, policy work and representation of Canadian interests internationally.

Job Description:
In CanGEA, the Policy Manager is responsible for translating policy priorities/gaps/opportunities identified by the Policy Manager, the CanGEA Board and CanGEA’s greater membership into clear, concise and actionable government engagement. The Policy Manager is the bridge between CanGEA members and policy makers so the successful applicant will also be able to effectively communicate government developments, programs, stakeholder engagements etc. to the CanGEA membership as they are released.

The Policy Manager’s main duties include but are not limited to:
  • Actively participate in all government (federal, provincial, and territorial) stakeholder engagements related to geothermal energy
  • Author memorandums and other government submissions, such as pre-budget consultations
  • Develop strong and positive relationships with elected officials and government employees to build geothermal awareness and knowledge at the level of decision makers
  • Craft professional reports
  • Pro-actively engage Canadian governments regarding geothermal
  • Support the efforts of CanGEA’s Operations Manager

The Policy Manager Intern will oversee the entirety of CanGEA’s advocacy efforts, which over the past few years have been quite successful, however, there is more to be done at all levels of government to further assist in the development of geothermal heat and energy projects throughout Canada.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Planning and executing educational and capacity building events for diverse audiences;
  • Developing educational briefs for the general public and elected officials;
  • Growing CanGEA’s membership through impactful social media presence and one on one business development meetings
  • Presenting at events
  • Preparing grant proposals
  • Identify new funding opportunities

Screening Criteria:
The ideal candidate has a professional attitude and experience in both technical and policy fields through a mixture of education and industry experience. The position is open to a diverse candidate pool and experience in geology is not required. Fields to be considered for the role:

  • Public Policy or Public Administration
  • Law
  • Political Science
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Other fields may be considered upon justification

The candidate must be comfortable working in a low structure environment, which includes being able to self-identify work priorities and operate independently.

The desired individual will possess the following abilities and skills:
  • Must be self-motivated and be able to work with little to no supervision
  • Experience in the Canadian energy field is an asset
  • Very strong attention to detail
To be eligible for this opportunity, the candidate must meet the following requirements:
  • A post-secondary graduate
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive)
  • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident of Canada, or granted refugee status in Canada
  • Legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial legislation and regulations

What CanGEA Offers:
The opportunity to become an expert on the policy needs in one of the youngest and fastest growing industries in Canada – geothermal energy. The Policy Manager intern will have the opportunity to develop self-led initiatives in conjunction with CanGEA’s member and the Board of Directors with the goal of creating a positive ecosystem for geothermal energy development throughout Canada. Past interns have had the opportunity to gain practical, high-level experience through the participation in activities such as federal committee meetings, provincial stakeholder engagements, and representing CanGEA at international events.

Please submit a resume and cover letter detailing why you are qualified for the position.
