B.C. is proposing an emissions cap for the oil and gas industry, which of course may result in increased opportunities for geothermal. CanGEA’s brief comments for this consultation were an echo of our submissions on the Net-Zero New Industry Policy, the Output Based Pricing System (OBPS) and other submissions. It has been noted in the engagement sessions that the intent of the oil and gas cap is not designed to impact production of conventional energy. CanGEA commends these well intentions, however, in practice, a cap on oil and gas emissions that doesn’t impact production is nearly impossible without the burden falling on consumers, especially if prioritizing the development of BC’s pristine subsurface renewable energy potential continues to be largely overlooked.
