CanGEA presented our policy priority – surface rights for geothermal and had a productive discussion. 

MLA Al-Guneid also pointed out another potential regulatory disparity to be investigated as a CanGEA policy opportunity – that there are support mechanisms provided to oil and gas under Alberta’s Liability Management Framework that may not be extended to geothermal. Although, decommissioning and cleaning up geothermal wells is likely an issue to be faced decades into the future given the long-lifespan of geothermal projects, CanGEA will be seeking clarity from the AER on this issue.
