Statement by CanGEA on the resignation of Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall: This morning, Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall announced his intention to retire from politics as leader of the Saskatchewan Party and the Premier of the Province. The Honourable Mr. Wall’s retirement from politics ends a two-decade career of public service. Mr. Wall has served as an MLA since 1997 before serving as Opposition leader for 3 years starting in 2004 and Premier for 9 years starting in 2007. Under Mr. Wall’s leadership, Saskatchewan took an enormous step forward in the push for geothermal energy development. Mr. Wall’s government issued the first Power Purchasing Agreement with CanGEA member DEEP. The Province is poised to host one of Canada’s first geothermal demonstration projects. As we reflect upon the achievements Saskatchewan has made under the current administration, it is important to highlight the work to be done ahead. Saskatchewan has set a goal to increase its renewable electricity capacity from 25% to 50% by 2030. The utilization of geothermal energy as base-load power will not only help the province meet this goal, but it will also satisfy the province’s ever growing energy demands. The utilization of geothermal heat as an alternative to traditional space heating techniques as well as for agricultural production is another important application of this emerging technology. CanGEA hopes that the agreement with DEEP is merely the first of many geothermal projects across the province that will meet the heat and electricity needs of its population.
