Check out this recent article from Folio discussing, "Why the Future of Global Energy is Local." The article is based on the notion put forward by Future Energy Systems Director, Larry Kostiuk that, "No single alternative energy technology is going to reliably meet the energy needs of every society around the world." The article and coinciding short audio segment emphasize the need to approach energy development based on what a given area has to offer in terms of resources, population, and other influencing factors rather than look to impose a one-size-fits-all energy solution in all jurisdictions. Though this is not a revolutionary way of thinking, it is quite interesting in the context Hinton case study that is used within the article, in which Hinton is highlighted for having switched from being a mining town, to a coal town, to a wood and forest products town, to a natural gas town, and finally Hinton is looking into developing their geothermal resources. The article and audio segment emphasize that throughout these changes, "people innovate along the way," creating new businesses, ideas and ultimately pushing the town (or society as a whole) forward.
