An atmosphere of cooperation was vibrant in Victoria this week, as the BC NDP and the BC Green Party agreed to form a stable minority government. With British Columbia as one of the provincial signatories of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, the outcome of the province’s May 9 election will no doubt have a lasting impact on the direction of the province’s renewable energy generation and carbon emission reduction programs. CanGEA welcomes the BC Green Party and BC NDP collaboration and congratulates both parties. Geothermal energy is a vast resource in British Columbia, with current estimates of the total power available in the province from geothermal energy at 700-5,700 MW. However, 30 years without sufficient research has left BC Hydro with little information regarding this potential source. Geothermal energy, along with the timely build out of other renewable energies, is a readily available alternative to the proposed Site C dam, and with the NDP and the Green Party both declaring their intention to place the mega-project under review, CanGEA hopes a new government will further explore the vast potential energy deep beneath the surface While we welcome the new government into office, we also take time to recognize the Liberal government’s many accomplishments in clean growth over the past 16 years. The Liberals removed many of the policy barriers hindering geothermal energy, and as result the geothermal industry in BC is far more developed than the rest of Canada. CanGEA would like to thank the Liberals for their service. Feras Obeid, CanGEA Policy Manger Intern Comments are closed.
