Policy Director

Job Title: Geothermal Policy Director
Employer: Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA)
Regular Hours: 30-37.5 hours/week
Start Date: ASAP

Job Description:
Within the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA), the Policy Director is responsible for formulating and translating policy priorities, goals, gaps, and opportunities identified by the CanGEA Board and CanGEA's greater membership into clear, concise, and actionable government engagement. The Policy Director is the bridge between CanGEA members and policy makers thus the successful applicant will also be able to effectively communicate government developments, programs, stakeholder engagements, legislative and regulatory changes, etc. to the CanGEA membership as they are released.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Policy Director will oversee the entirety of CanGEA's advocacy efforts, which over the past few years have been quite successful, however, there is more to be done at all levels of government to further assist in the development of geothermal heating/cooling and electricity projects throughout Canada. The Policy Director's main duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop strong, positive, and collaborative relationships with government officials, ministries/branches, and stakeholders to build geothermal awareness and knowledge at the level of decision makers
  • Actively participate in all government (federal, provincial, and territorial and occasionally municipally and Indigenous) stakeholder engagements related to geothermal energy
  • Author memorandums and other government submissions, such as pre-budget consultations
  • Draft policy briefs for internal and industry stakeholders
  • Conduct research to support CanGEA’s organizational objectives
  • Draft and publish CanGEA’s policy positions and professional reports

Other responsibilities may include:
  • Attending government/regulatory workshops/conferences
  • Developing educational briefs for the general public, bureaucrats and elected officials
  • Presenting at events

Knowledge and Skills:
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Experience in a policy role within government and/or industry
  • Comprehensive understanding of Federal, Provincial, and Territorial legislation, regulations, and guidelines
  • Working knowledge of the Canadian policy process framework as it relates to advocacy and the legislative process
  • Understanding of climate policy and climate change concepts, and climate change related development
  • Highly effective written and oral communicator
  • Experience in the Canadian energy field is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail and strong research skills

The candidate must be comfortable working in an in-person downtown Calgary office environment, as well as be able to self-identify work priorities and operate independently.

The ideal candidate has a professional attitude and experience in both technical and policy fields through a mixture of education and industry experience. The position is open to a diverse candidate pool and experience in geoscience or engineering is not required.

Eligibility:
Due to the government youth funding program CanGEA is using to support this role, the candidate must meet the following conditions:
  1. Upon commencement of work, be under 31 years of age
  2. Be Unemployed, Underemployed, or a Student/Recent Graduate
  3. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or hold refugee status
