The Investment Workshop and Networking Reception will bring together investors, financiers and stakeholders in the geothermal power industry to explore the wealth of opportunity in this emerging renewable energy sector.

Geothermal power has been referred to as the “King of Renewables” with consistent base-load power production, low emissions and a small environmental footprint. Under potential carbon emission legislation geothermal energy offers a CO2 free, clean source of power. Geothermal energy also has the unique potential to provide carbon offsets in the Canadian energy marketplace. With an estimated potential of over 5,000 MW, from traditional development methods alone, geothermal power’s significance in Canada’s energy portfolio will continue to grow. Geothermal energy in Canada represents an investment potential of nearly $20 billion.

As the number of investor prospects in geothermal power broadens, a trusted forum for investor education and networking in the geothermal power industry has been absent. This unique event aims to deliver a one-stop solution through a series of expert-led presentations and the opportunity to network with the biggest names in geothermal power.

Attendees at the conference will learn geothermal power basics from CanGEA experts, explore prominent geothermal power projects in the industry, and understand the development perspective from a distinguished finance, legal and utilities panel. The Workshop will also provide an overview of the Canadian Geothermal Reserves and Reporting Code aimed at improving investor confidence in the geothermal energy industry through the establishment of key metrics for geothermal value. The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Michal Moore, co-author of the M.I.T. report “The Future of Geothermal Energy”. Dr. Moore will explore the potential for geothermal energy in Canada’s most significant energy development, the Alberta Oil Sands.

Alison Thompson, CanGEA’s Chairman, is excited for the opportunity to showcase geothermal power in Alberta, “CanGEA is looking forward to Canada’s energy capital, Calgary, embracing the king of renewable energy, geothermal power. In addition to savvy resource investors and an established energy finance community, Alberta offers a highly skilled talent pool of geoscientists and engineers who can contribute to the development of geothermal energy and CanGEA’s goal of 5,000 MW by 2015!”

Confirmed speakers include representatives from Magma Energy Corp, Sierra Geothermal Power Inc, Dundee Securities Corp, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, Jacob Securities Inc and more.

Space is limited at the event so prospective attendees are encouraged to sign up soon. Sponsorship opportunities are also still available.

CanGEA Welcomes B.C. Government Commitment to Green Energy

For Immediate Release:

CanGEA WELCOMES BC GOVERNMENT Commitment TO GREEN ENERGY

VANCOUVER, BC August 26, 2009 – The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) today welcomed the British Columbia government’s announced intention to appoint a Green Energy Advisory Task Force to recommend a blueprint for maximizing B.C.’s clean power potential – including its geothermal potential - in keeping with the government’s BC Energy Plan.

Tuesday’s Throne Speech from the BC Liberal government also called for “prescribed” clean power calls which will provide planning certainty to power developers. And the government promised new investments in transmission and new approaches to taxation policies affecting the industry.

“We also welcome the government’s decision to give specific direction to the BC Utilities Commission (BCUC) with respect to the phasing out of BC Hydro’s gas-fired Burrard Thermal Plant as a critical part of the province’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy,” said Alison Thompson, CanGEA Chair and Executive Director.

A recent BCUC suggestion that the production capacity of Burrard Thermal should be increased - rather than meeting BC’s energy needs with clean, renewable power from private producers - had been criticized by both power producers and leading environmentalists.

“The Throne Speech made it plain that British Columbia intends to, and I quote, ‘take every step necessary to become a clean energy powerhouse, as indicated in the BC Energy Plan,’” Thompson said. She noted that the BC Energy Plan requires that almost all new electrical generation in BC come from private producers and that 90% of that power be from clean energy sources such as geothermal, wind, solar and small hydro.

                                                    Canadian Geothermal Industry Tightens Cooperation
Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) and Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) Sign Cooperation Memorandum.

Calgary, December 10, 2007 –The Canadian GeoExchange Coalition (CGC) and the Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) announced today the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at promoting active cooperation in the field of geothermal energy and geothermal heat pump technology. The associations play complementary roles and together represent the entire spectrum of geothermal applications - including low temperature heat pumps, medium temperature direct use and high temperature electricity generation.

The growth for geothermal electric power has been approximately three percent yearly over the past ten years with an average of 250 MWe of capacity added each year. “In Canada, where geothermal electric power potential exists but no projects are operating”, Alison Thompson, Vice President of CanGEA comments “it can be confidently said that we have yet to even begin to tap our nation’s economic and environmental potential of geothermal energy.”

In contrast, the geothermal heat pump market has expanded at a rate close to 40 % annually over each of the past three years. “We are now entering a consolidation phase of our industry with the implementation of key market infrastructure tools such as training and accreditation to help sustain the expected growth,” said Denis Tanguay, CGC President & CEO. “As the geoexchange industry grows, new technologies and applications are emerging. Sharing key information between the low, medium and high temperature stakeholders will help us promote the overall use of geothermal energy in Canada,” he added.

“It is because of this significant growth potential in the geothermal industry and the impressive environmental characteristics of these projects, that CanGEA warmly welcomes the co-operation of CGC and CanGEA working together to bring Canadians a renewable, reliable and responsible form of energy,” added Alison Thompson.

Cooperation will be encouraged in a number of areas including exchange of information, development of business opportunities, joint initiatives such as R&D and market response projects and general geothermal energy and geothermal heat pump technology cooperation. Recently, CGC and CanGEA made joint representation to the Federal Government asking for the restoration of geothermal funding for the Geological Survey of Canada.

The Canadian Geothermal Energy Association (CanGEA) is an organisation of industry (geothermal & oil and gas) and academic representatives involved in advocating rapid development of geothermal projects in Canada and educating about Canada’s geothermal energy resources.
